En 1992, les deux cinéastes ont tourné un film sur les habitantes du Rwanda, un petit pays montagneux. Les Hutu et les Tutsi vivaient alors dans des hameaux disséminés sur les collines. Les travaux collectifs étaient l'occasion, pour les femmes, de partager leurs joies et leurs soucis, mais aussi de consolider la cohésion de leur communauté. Quatre ans plus tard - après le génocide dévastateur - les deux cinéastes sont retournés voir ces femmes.
